Robb and I decided to try the hike up the Diamond Head crater yesterday. Man was it way more than I expected. It is 0.8 miles up to the top. It starts out as a concrete walkway for about a 1/4 of the way. Then it turns into the dirt and rock trail. What makes it harder is that you have people coming back down and there is not a whole lot of room for passing. Then towards the top there is a set of stairs that start the final leg to the top. The first set of stairs aren't bad but the second set is straight up. Then you walk through a tunnel. That part was very cool. We are glad to have made it to the top because it is the most spectacular view I have ever seen. I know once we leave I will miss the mountains and all the green.
Here is a short history of the crater. It was built in 1908 as part of the US Army Coastal Artillery defense system. You can still see the battery stations that were built at the top. They called the crater Fort Ruger. It was in use until 194o. In the early 70's they closed it down and built the stairs and tunnel for hikers to get through. If you ever come to Oahu I recommend you take a couple of hours and lots of water and make the hike.
I have put a few pics in the web album. We took almost a 100 pics so I picked a few of the good ones to share.
